South Korean yard kicks off the year with containership pair order

South Korea’s HJ Shipbuilding & Construction (HJSC) has won a contract from an unnamed European shipowner to build two 10,100 teu container ships.

The shipbuilding contract is worth KRW 353.2bln and includes an option for two more ships, the shipyard said in a press release last week.

“The deal marks the first time that a container ship exceeding 10,000 teu will be constructed at HJSC’s Yeongdo Shipyard,” it added.

The contract represents a repeat order from a client that previously placed container ship orders with the company.

The new ships, which will feature an advanced hull design, will be equipped with scrubber systems and optimized hull forms to comply with International Maritime Organization (IMO) environmental regulations.

The shipbuilder said that it recently completed the delivery of a 9,000-teu methanol-powered container ship for HMM.

Over the past several years, HJSC has focused on developing mid-sized container ships to strengthen its competitiveness in the segment.

CEO Yoo Sang-cheol stated, “Through continuous innovation and engineering breakthroughs, we have overcome physical limitations and are now able to build container ships exceeding 10,000 TEU at Yeongdo Shipyard.”
