Mitsubishi ships first ammonia fuel systems for marine engines

Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. has shipped the first ammonia fuel supply and gas abatement systems for marine engines, marking a key step in advancing ammonia-powered shipping.

The company delivered an ammonia fuel supply system (AFSS) and an ammonia gas abatement system (AGAS) to Japan Engine Corporation (J-ENG). The systems will support J-ENG’s ammonia-fueled marine engine, the 7UEC50LSJA-HPSCR. Commissioning will begin shortly.

The AFSS ensures the stable and safe supply of ammonia fuel to the engine. The AGAS treats surplus ammonia generated when switching from ammonia to conventional fuel oil. Both systems feature integrated control technology that enables remote operation and automatic control, improving safety and efficiency onboard.

The early deployment will allow onboard verification of the full ammonia propulsion package. It combines J-ENG’s next-generation engine with Mitsubishi Shipbuilding’s fuel supply and gas treatment systems. The companies expect this integration to accelerate maritime decarbonization.

Mitsubishi Shipbuilding said it will continue strengthening its capabilities to meet rising demand for ammonia-fueled vessels as the industry moves toward lower-emission solutions.
