HMM launches new MA2 service
HMM has announced the launch of its new Mediterranean-West Africa Service (MA2), scheduled to commence in July 2026. This service is a core component of HMM’s “hub-and-spoke” strategy, designed to link main east-west trade lanes with emerging African markets.
Service Overview
-
Commencement: Second week of July 2026.
-
Cooperation: Operated in partnership with Ocean Network Express (ONE).
-
Vessel Deployment: Five 2,800 TEU container vessels.
-
Duration: 35-day round-trip.
Port Rotation The service will utilize Algeciras as a central hub for connectivity: Algeciras (Spain) – Tangier (Morocco) – Dakar (Senegal) – Tema (Ghana) – Lekki (Nigeria) – Abidjan (Côte d’Ivoire) – Algeciras (Spain)
Strategic Fleet Expansion To support the expansion of its feeder networks, HMM has secured 24 feeder vessels over the past six months:
-
Ten 2,800 TEU ships: Ordered from HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (March 2026).
-
Two 1,900 TEU ships: Acquired from the market earlier this year.
-
Twelve 1,800-2,700 TEU ships: Ordered last October.
According to an HMM official, the MA2 service acts as a strategic gateway to high-potential emerging markets, allowing the carrier to build a more comprehensive global network by integrating these feeder services with its main-haul routes.
