Maersk raises intermodal fuel fees in Australia and New Zealand amid energy cost surge

A.P. Moller – Maersk has increased its intermodal fuel fees in Australia and New Zealand as rising global energy prices continue to impact inland transport costs.

The updated Intermodal Fuel Fee (EFS/IFS) will apply from 1 May 2026 and will be reviewed monthly.

New surcharge levels

  • New Zealand: +27%
  • Australia:
    • Victoria: +18%
    • New South Wales: +18%
    • Queensland: +18%
    • South Australia: +18%
    • Western Australia: +18%.

Driven by global fuel disruption

Maersk said the increase reflects continued volatility in global energy markets, driven by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

The situation around the Strait of Hormuz, through which around 20% of global fuel supply passes, has tightened fuel availability and pushed up costs.

These conditions are placing pressure on landside and intermodal operations, including trucking and rail services.

Temporary but adjustable

The company introduced the Intermodal Fuel Fee in March 2026 as a temporary measure to maintain service reliability and secure transport capacity.

Maersk said further adjustments may follow depending on how fuel markets evolve.

The surcharge applies to inland transport services and is designed to reflect actual cost increases while ensuring continuity across its logistics network.
