Swire Shipping revises emergency bunker surcharge across global trades
Swire Shipping has announced a revision of its Emergency Bunker Surcharge (EBS), reflecting ongoing volatility in global fuel markets.
The updated surcharge will apply to shipments with a bill of lading date on or after May 12, 2026. The adjustment covers multiple trade routes between global regions and the South Pacific.
For cargo moving from Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia and the US West Coast to Papua New Guinea, the South Pacific islands, Timor-Leste, New Zealand and northern Australian ports, the surcharge will be set at USD 315 for 20-foot containers and USD 630 for 40-foot containers. Reefer containers will be charged at USD 378 and USD 756 respectively, while breakbulk cargo will incur USD 15.75 per revenue tonne.
In the opposite direction, rates will be lower, with USD 157.50 for 20-foot containers and USD 315 for 40-foot units. Reefer charges will be USD 189 and USD 378, with breakbulk set at USD 7.88 per revenue tonne.
Similar surcharge levels will apply to regional trades between Australia, New Zealand and South Pacific destinations, as well as intra-Pacific routes.
Swire Shipping noted that the EBS will be applied in addition to the existing Bunker Adjustment Factor (BAF) for the first quarter of 2026.
The company said the revision is necessary to address continued fuel cost pressures and advised customers to contact local representatives for further details.
