Chinese ship owners build boxships in local shipyards as demand mounts
Chinese ship owners have been ordering container ships at mid-tier shipbuilders that can offer earlier delivery dates, amid strong demand for tonnage.
This month, two Chinese ship owners, Xiamen Yixiang Shipping and Xiamen Haoxiang Shipping, each ordered a 5,700 TEU ship at Zhejiang Mingfei Shipbuilding. Priced at US$48.7 million each, the ships will be delivered in 2027.
