ITOPF and Britannia Club join forces on LNG spills response
The International Tanker Owners Pollution Federation (ITOPF) announced on 8 May that it conducted a table-top workshop in collaboration with Britannia P&I Club in Singapore, focused on responding to a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) spill scenario.
As announced, this session was part of a new training initiative called HYDRO NEXUS. During the half-day training Britannia team members were tasked with managing a simulated LNG bunker spill from an alternatively fuelled vessel.
Furthermore, the workshop covered key steps in responding to incidents involving alternative fuels and hazardous and noxious substances (HNS), including information gathering, risk assessment, PPE selection, and the use of specialized techniques and equipment tailored to these types of spills.
A core focus of the exercise was understanding the potential impacts and claims that P&I insurers could face during such incidents.
Teams assessed a range of costs, including those related to loss of life and personal injury, clean-up operations, preventive measures, property damage, economic losses, and environmental claims.
