The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) rescued a trapped engine crew member after the vessel MV Theresa I capsized at Berth 1 of APO Cement Port on 11 March.

According to the Coast Guard District Central Visayas (CGDCV), the vessel was carrying out loading operations when it suddenly began to list during de-ballasting procedures. The shifting of cargo subsequently worsened the imbalance, ultimately causing the vessel to capsize.

During the incident, responders confirmed that one engine crew member had become trapped inside the engine room. Coast Guard personnel immediately launched rescue operations and successfully extracted the crew member, who was later provided with medical attention.

All 19 crew members on board were accounted for and safely evacuated. However, a cement handler was unfortunately injured after being struck by a mooring line that snapped amid the vessel’s capsizing. The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital but was declared dead on arrival by the attending physician.

To prevent potential marine pollution, the CGDCV deployed 100 meters of oil spill boom around the vessel and continues to monitor the area for any signs of oil leakage.
