US intercepts tanker in the Arabian Sea as part of its blockage against Iran
U.S. Central Command says it intercepted a merchant vessel, the Sevan, in the Arabian Sea on 25 April as part of enforcement operations tied to a blockade targeting Iranian maritime trade.
According to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), the Sevan is one of 19 vessels in a so-called “shadow fleet” sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury for allegedly transporting Iranian energy products, including oil, gas, propane, and butane, to foreign markets.
The ship was stopped by a U.S. Navy helicopter operating from the guided-missile destroyer USS Pinckney, and officials say it is currently complying with instructions to turn back toward Iran under escort.
Yesterday, M/V Sevan was among 19 “shadow fleet” vessels sanctioned by the U.S. Department of Treasury for activities related to transporting billions of dollars worth of Iranian energy, oil and gas products, including propane and butane, to foreign markets.
