IMO welcomes entry into force of the BBNJ Agreement
The Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement targets sustainable use of marine biodiversity in international waters.

The treaty was adopted at the UN headquarters in New York in 2023, following years of negotiations.
The world’s first global treaty to protect ocean life in international waters enters into force on 17 January 2026, bringing into effect legally-binding rules for the sustainable use and management of marine resources in the high seas.
