Hackers launch cyber attack targeting Iranian fleet
A hacker group known as Lab-Dookhtegan has claimed responsibility for a cyberattack on Iran’s maritime sector, disabling communications on more than 60 oil tankers and cargo ships.
The group said it infiltrated the National Iranian Tanker Company (NITC) and the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL), disrupting operations on 39 tankers and 25 cargo ships by breaching systems operated by an Iranian IT and telecoms holding company.
According to the hackers, they obtained root-level access to systems running the vessels’ satellite terminals, shutting down the central software for maritime communications.
This cut connections between ships and shore, disabling automatic identification system (AIS) tracking and satellite links. As informed, the attack coincided with Iranian naval maneuvers in the Gulf of Oman, further compounding disruptions.
This is not the first such incident. In March 2025, the same group claimed it had disabled communications on 116 Iranian vessels, timing that attack with US operations against Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen.
