Spanish scale-up enters Norway, brings its ammonia-to-hydrogen technology

Spanish scale-up company H2SITE has launched a subsidiary in Norway to focus on deploying its ammonia-to-hydrogen systems in the maritime sector and accelerate vessel decarbonization.

Through H2SITE Norway AS, based in Bergen, H2SITE is looking to supply onboard cracking systems to Norwegian companies that deliver high-purity hydrogen that can be supplied directly to fuel cells or blend in engines.

The local presence will enable the Spanish firm to work directly with Norwegian shipowners, shipyards and technology partners to adapt its systems to real vessel profiles and operating conditions.

The decision is driven by risk management, as the company said, noting that the commercial and regulatory risks of delaying decarbonization now outweigh the risks associated with adopting new technologies. Ammonia, when used as an energy carrier and combined with efficient conversion systems, offers a credible route towards zero-emissions vessels and long-term compliance rather than short-term mitigation.

The next step is pilot and demonstration projects that will deploy systems in real operating environments, gathering operational data and refining solutions in close cooperation with the Norwegian maritime industry.
