As MEPC 84 convenes to address how the shipping industry can reduce pollution and emissions, SEA-LNG has issued a statement emphasizing the need for a unified global decarbonisation framework.
As stated, SEA-LNG offers its full support to IMO MEPC delegates as they gather in London this week for MEPC 84. The task before them is genuinely difficult — reconciling a wide range of stakeholder positions on complex techno-economic questions in a challenging geopolitical environment — recognising the commitment and expertise delegates bring to that task.
Our position remains clear: there can only be one global decarbonisation framework for maritime. Regional fragmentation, with its risk of multiple and duplicated compliance costs, serves neither shipping nor the climate. We are calling for a framework that is goal-based and technology-neutral, that protects first movers, and that incentivises solutions which are practical, scalable and investable.
…SEA-LNG highlighted.
While Member State positions remain varied, SEA-LNG underscored its optimism that delegates can find common ground, and that it will closely monitor proceedings and stands ready to support the process, including by contributing the evidence base on methane-based pathways.
To remind, a joint statement issued on Monday 20 April by shipping associations reaffirmed strong support for the International Maritime Organization as the principal global regulator of international shipping, emphasising that maritime decarbonisation is a multi-stakeholder process that requires coordinated action across the entire maritime ecosystem.
