AET, a prominent global operator of maritime transport assets and specialized services, has partnered with Fleetzero, a company focused on creating modular marine batteries for hybrid and electric vessels. Together, they aim to develop the longest-range plug-in hybrid-electric ship in the world.
The agreement was formalized at AET’s Offshore office in Galveston, Texas, with key representatives from both organizations present.Capt. Ron Wood, AET’s Global Director of Commercial Operations, and Mr. Steven Henderson, CEO of Fleetzero, signed the contract.
As part of this collaboration, one of AET’s Lightering Support Vessels (LSV) will be upgraded to include a plug-in hybrid-electric system. This vessel is expected to run mainly on battery power—resulting in an approximate 82% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional LSVs on a tank-to-wake basis. This initiative could prevent around 1,220 tonnes of greenhouse gases annually while also lowering fuel consumption and maintenance expenses without compromising safety standards.
“This partnership represents a significant milestone in our journey toward decarbonization and energy transition,” stated Mr. Zahid Osman, President & Group CEO of MISC Group. “We are excited to collaborate with Fleetzero on developing the largest plug-in hybrid-electric LSV globally as part of our commitment to innovative solutions within the maritime sector.”
He added that integrating these electric solutions into their fleet transforms aspirations into tangible actions aimed at delivering greater energy efficiency with reduced emissions. the pilot project will also assess the technology’s feasibility and operational performance for potential broader submission across AET’s fleet—and possibly MISC’s as well.
Mr. Steven Henderson expressed enthusiasm about this initiative: “This project is set to propel marine electrification forward commercially while considerably cutting emissions from vessel operations. Our team at Fleetzero includes many former mariners who designed this technology not only for improved efficiency but also for enhanced safety and ease during
