Taiwan Unveils Innovative Stealth Drone Vessel for Modern Warfare

Taking a page from Ukraine’s playbook, which showcased the effectiveness of drone boats in the Black Sea,Taiwan has rolled out its own version of an unmanned attack vessel, complete with some innovative tweaks.

Meet the “Endeavor Manta,” a sleek trimaran crafted from fiberglass and stretching 28 feet in length. This prototype is powered by two outboard motors—a choice that might seem unconventional for military applications but offers a cost-effective solution. With a total displacement of around five tonnes when loaded with weapons and fuel, this nimble craft can zip along at speeds exceeding 35 knots, as reported by CSBC. Its compact design allows it to launch from smaller ports or even rugged beaches, making it tricky for adversaries to intercept during deployments.

In contrast to Taiwan’s approach, Ukraine’s drone boats are designed as smaller monohulls featuring inboard propulsion systems. Initially intended as one-way missions—essentially floating bombs aimed at enemy ships—they have since evolved into more versatile platforms capable of carrying FPV drones and anti-aircraft missiles among other payloads.

The Endeavor Manta is set to be equipped with lightweight torpedoes that enable multiple attack runs during surface engagements. It also retains capabilities for ramming attacks if needed.

The current iteration includes space for a human operator; though, it’s still unclear whether this feature will remain in the final model. CSBC has indicated that the Manta boasts autonomous navigation capabilities and can autonomously return home if it loses connection with its command center.

This prototype aligns well with U.S.military strategies regarding potential conflicts in the Taiwan Strait. Adm. Sam Paparo of U.S. Indo-Pacific Command envisions creating an array of unmanned systems—what he describes as a “hellscape”—to deter any Chinese invasion long enough for customary forces to respond effectively.
