Reviving Connections: Paris-Milan Train Service Resumes After Landslide Repairs
EUROPE: After a lengthy hiatus, train services between Paris and Milan resumed on March 31, following extensive repairs from a significant landslide that occurred near Maurienne in August 2023.
SNCF Voyageurs has reintroduced its Paris-Milan route with three daily round trips utilizing six TGV Réseau PLT (Paris-Lyon-Torino) trains. These trains make stops at key locations including Macon-Loché TGV, Chambéry, Modane, Oulx, Torino Porta Susa, and Milano Porta garibaldi.
The CEO of SNCF Voyageurs, Christophe Fanichet, shared that there have already been around 110,000 reservations made for the service—indicating a solid occupancy rate of about 70%. He noted that during the disruption period, SNCF was proactive in providing alternative transport options. A bus service connecting St-Michel-de-Maurienne to Oulx successfully transported approximately 208,000 passengers from January to March of this year.
The Italian rail operator Trenitalia also resumed its Paris-Milan connections on April 1. They are running two return trips each day using their Frecciarossa ETR400 trains with stops at Lyon-Part-Dieu and other major stations like Chambéry and Torino-Porta-Susa before reaching Milano Centrale.
This revival is seen as a significant milestone for Trenitalia and the broader FS group.CEO Gianpiero Strisciuglio emphasized how this connection not only links Italy to France but also opens up travel possibilities for passengers coming from various Italian cities served by Trenitalia. “We’re kicking off this service with renewed enthusiasm,” he added. The route had previously enjoyed great success before the landslide incident—carrying over three million travelers within just the first year and a half while maintaining high satisfaction levels among customers.
A Broader Perspective
This situation highlights how essential rail connectivity is across Europe—not just for tourism but also for business travel and freight transport. As these services gradually ramp up again—including freight operations—the focus will be on ensuring reliability while enhancing passenger experience through improved amenities onboard. div >
