China Demands Reparation Following Collision Between Taiwanese Naval Ship and Chinese Vessel

China is seeking financial reparations from Taiwan following a collision between a Taiwanese naval vessel and a Chinese fishing boat in the Taiwan Strait last month.

The incident took place just after midnight on March 27, 2025, involving the Taiwanese ship Chung Ho and the Chinese trawler Minlianyu 61756. This mishap occurred approximately 45 nautical miles (83 kilometers) from Taichung Port, notably outside of Taiwan’s designated restricted waters by about nine nautical miles.

A representative from China’s Taiwan Affairs Office stated that the fishing boat was stationary at the time of impact. Preliminary reports suggest that this vessel had its automatic identification system (AIS) activated along wiht warning lights. In contrast, it was claimed that the Chung Ho did not have its AIS or warning signals operational during the incident, placing full blame on the Taiwanese ship.

The spokesperson also criticized the navy crew for their lack of accountability post-accident. In light of China’s demands for compensation, taiwan’s navy has announced an ongoing investigation led by its coast guard to assess what transpired.
