Exploring New Horizons: A Comprehensive Study on the Costa del Sol Railway Initiative
In Spain, a collaboration between WSP Spain and Mcrit has landed a €1 million contract from the Ministry of Transport & Lasting Mobility.Their mission? To explore the feasibility of a long-discussed railway that would connect Málaga with its airport, popular Costa del Sol destinations, and Algeciras.
This proposed rail line aims to stretch from Málaga to various hotspots like Nerja in the east and Fuengirola, Marbella, Estepona, and Algeciras in the west.
The upcoming study will assess if it’s feasible to integrate this new route with the existing Cercanías line C1. Currently running between Málaga, the airport, and Fuengirola—this line operates on a single track for part of its journey—which limits how many trains can run at once. Notably absent from this route are bustling towns like Estepona and Marbella to the west of Fuengirola as well as areas along eastern Costa del Sol.
