LEGO Chooses Virginia for Major 2 Million-Square-Foot Logistics Center
LEGO Group is gearing up for a significant expansion in Virginia, with plans to invest $366 million into a massive 2,000,000-square-foot distribution center in Prince George County. This new hub will be situated at 8800 Wells Station Road within the crosspointe Business Centre and is set to create around 305 jobs by its anticipated opening in 2027.
Carsten Rasmussen, LEGO Group’s Chief Operations Officer, shared his excitement about this growth: “This regional distribution center will work hand-in-hand with our factory currently being built in Virginia. Together, they’ll enhance our manufacturing and distribution capabilities across the Americas for years ahead. Plus, we’re keen on minimizing lead times and reducing our environmental footprint through a more efficient supply chain. We truly appreciate the ongoing support from Virginia and can’t wait to bring even more joy to children both locally and globally.”
This initiative marks another step in LEGO’s expanding footprint across North America. With an additional factory underway near Richmond, this facility will become their second distribution point in the region—complementing an existing site located in Fort worth, Texas. The aim? To get closer to customers while speeding up deliveries and lowering their ecological impact.
Construction is slated to kick off later this year after LEGO inked a build-to-suit lease agreement with crosspointe Commerce Center—a collaboration between Hillwood Investment Properties and The Silverman Group. A third-party logistics firm will manage operations at this new center.
Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin has greenlit a $2.53 million grant from the Chance Fund to bolster this project further. Additionally, the Virginia Economic Development Partnership (VEDP) is stepping up by offering assistance with recruitment and training via its Jobs Investment Program.
Juan Pablo Segura, Secretary of Commerce and Trade remarked on LEGO’s expansion: “The decision of such an iconic brand that inspires creativity among kids worldwide highlights not onyl our community’s strength but also showcases local talent.” He emphasized that this investment brings quality job opportunities to Prince George County while reinforcing their commitment towards nurturing vibrant communities.
Moreover, LEGO stands to gain from the Port of Virginia’s Economic Development Grant Program aimed at promoting growth near maritime hubs—an effort designed for companies like theirs that are looking toward future expansions.
Stephen A. Edwards from the Virginia Port Authority noted: “LEGO’s increased investment solidifies its role within Virginia’s corporate landscape.” He added that parallel investments by the Port of Virginia are crucial for meeting demands stemming from such expansions—showcasing confidence not just in LEGO but also highlighting how well-equipped they are for lasting cargo movement into global markets moving forward.”
