For the first time, Ukraine’s Defence Intelligence has unveiled its innovative sea drones, which have played a crucial role in targeting Russian naval assets and aircraft.
The MAGURA series of drones has been instrumental for HUR’s elite Group 13, significantly altering the dynamics of naval combat in the Black Sea to Ukraine’s advantage.
Among the showcased models was the MAGURA V5, Ukraine’s primary drone designed for engaging with Russian maritime forces. This drone boasts a payload capacity of approximately 320 kg and is outfitted with a combat module featuring a machine gun.
Also on display was the versatile MAGURA V6P, capable of covering an notable range of 540 nautical miles. The MAGURA V7 model stood out as well; it has successfully taken down enemy aircraft and can carry up to 650 kg over distances reaching 800 nautical miles.
Another variant of the MAGURA V7 equipped with a heavy machine gun was also highlighted during this presentation.
The unit’s commander, known by his call sign Thirteenth, expressed confidence that their operations have effectively pushed back Russian naval forces into their home ports while limiting their operational capabilities significantly.
To date, these advanced sea drones have enabled Ukraine to neutralize 17 Russian targets. This includes two Mi-8 helicopters and two Su-30 fighter jets along with several vessels from Russia’s Black Sea Fleet such as Sergey Kotov and Ivanovets. The total estimated damage inflicted upon Russia exceeds $500 million.
Despite these successes, some Russian ships continue to operate within Ukrainian waters—especially near occupied Crimea. Ongoing drone strikes utilizing both sea drones and UAVs have compelled Moscow to shift parts of its fleet to Novorossiysk for safety reasons.
while challenges remain in securing complete control over maritime areas, Ukraine’s strategic use of technology like the MAGURA drones is reshaping naval engagements in significant ways.
