Ferroport Strengthens Monitoring Efforts to Aid Wildlife Preservation
[By: Axis Communications]
Ferroport, the operator of the iron ore terminal at Port of Açu in São João da Barra, Brazil, has taken a notable step towards enhancing security and sustainability by installing advanced video surveillance systems from Axis Communications. These high-tech cameras not only improve nighttime visibility but also reduce environmental disruption by minimizing artificial lighting that can harm local wildlife.
This collaboration with Axis has enabled Ferroport to easily comply with Brazilian port regulations while reinforcing its commitment to sustainability. The ISPS Code and Federal Revenue Service Ordinance 143 require constant video monitoring at ports, prompting Ferroport to seek solutions that would meet these requirements without compromising their conservation efforts. Their dedication is evident in initiatives like planting 66,000 trees over six months and protecting over 1.3 million loggerhead sea turtle hatchlings as 2008.
“At Ferroport, security is paramount,” shared Marcelo oliveira, Property Security Coordinator. “We have installed 206 cameras covering various areas including offshore zones and perimeters. While we could monitor during the day effectively, nighttime posed challenges due to low light conditions. Partnering with Axis allowed us to capture clear images even in total darkness—boosting our security measures while being mindful of ecological concerns.”
The upgrade involved a refined network capable of providing reliable surveillance around the clock. Initially starting with just 20 Axis cameras, Ferroport quickly recognized their value and expanded the system as it became clear how beneficial they were for both safety and environmental goals.
- Implement a cutting-edge solution that harmonizes security needs with ecological obligation.
- Obtain high-quality visuals even in complete darkness—reducing reliance on disruptive artificial lights.
- Avoid using night floodlights so endangered species like maned wolves and capybaras can thrive undisturbed.
- Utilize advanced analytics for perimeter detection to thwart unauthorized access via land or sea.
“ferroport aimed to boost its security without compromising its core values,” noted Winicius Corali, Regional Sales Manager for Brazil at Axis communications. “We collaborated closely with them to find a solution that met regulatory demands while supporting their conservation mission. We hope Ferroport’s approach inspires other ports looking for similar advancements.”
