Empowering the Next Generation: V. and International Seaways Introduce Women in Maritime Cadet Initiative
[by: V.Group]
V.Group, a leading player in ship management and marine services, has teamed up with International Seaways (NYSE: INSW), one of the top tanker firms globally, to kick off an innovative programme aimed at boosting female portrayal in maritime careers.
This initiative is all about creating a welcoming atmosphere for women at sea. Together with INSW, V. is rolling out several strategic measures that include gender-specific facilities, tailored workwear and safety gear,as well as health and wellness programs. Starting this September, the new female cadets will embark on their journeys aboard two specially equipped training vessels. They’ll receive guidance from experienced female officers from the INSW fleet during their initial rotation. These efforts are part of a broader onboard culture training initiative designed to foster best practices for inclusivity and safety that benefit everyone on board.
Currently, women represent less than 2% of the global seafaring workforce—a stark contrast to the industry’s pressing skills gap. This collaborative effort aims not only to enhance visibility for women in maritime roles but also to tap into underrepresented talent pools, ultimately fostering a more diverse and enduring workforce.
“Women in seafaring hold immense potential that remains largely untapped,” said Lois Zabrocky, CEO of INSW. “We’re excited about our partnership with V., which focuses on creating an inclusive environment where everyone can thrive.”
“As we celebrate International Day for Women in Maritime 2025,” she continued, “we urge everyone to join us in advocating for safe workplaces that support all individuals. Equal opportunities led not just to personal growth but also elevate our entire industry.”
René Kofod-Olsen, CEO of V.group chimed in: “This initiative aligns perfectly with our ongoing collaboration with INSW; it’s essential for our industry’s future success. Embracing diversity isn’t just good ethics—it’s smart business strategy too! It helps us attract top talent necessary for achieving operational excellence at sea.”
