Digital Innovation: New Interlocking Contract Secured in Ireland

In a significant move for IrelandS rail system, Iarnród Éireann has teamed up with Siemens Mobility to kick off a major project worth over €100 million. This partnership focuses on modernizing the railway’s interlocking technology over the next two decades.

The plan involves implementing Siemens’ Trackguard Westlock CBI at dublin’s National Train Control Center, which will streamline train operations. This upgrade is set to replace outdated systems from the 1980s, with full network coverage anticipated by 2040.

The Westlock system enhances the older Solid State interlocking technology that has been prevalent in both Ireland and the UK.It maintains compatibility with existing SSI programming and hardware while boosting capacity substantially—up to four times more than before!

“This initiative is all about enhancing rail travel for passengers and improving freight efficiency,” shared Rob Morris, Joint CEO & Managing director of Rail Infrastructure & Software at Siemens Mobility UK&I during an announcement on May 16.

Iarnród Éireann’s Director of Infrastructure, Éamonn Balance, emphasized their commitment to expanding services: “As we aim to make rail a key player in Ireland’s sustainable transport future, collaborating with partners like Siemens who align with our vision for safe and high-quality service is crucial. Our investment plans are transitioning from ideas into action.”
