MAN L35/44DF CD GenSet Achieves Certification Milestone

[By: MAN Energy Solutions]

MAN Energy Solutions has just wrapped up a successful Type Approval Test (TAT) for its innovative dual-fuel MAN L35/44DF engine, designed for use as an auxiliary GenSet and electric propulsion at steady speeds of 720 and 750rpm. This test evaluated both the methane-capable 35/44DF CD and the methanol-ready variant.

The testing took place from April 7 to April 11 at STX Engine’s headquarters in Changwon, South Korea, with oversight from six classification societies.

The L35/44DF CD is an enhanced model of the earlier L35/44DF CR engine that debuted in 2015. It boasts an Adaptive Combustion Control (ACC) system that continuously monitors combustion conditions to optimize fuel injection.

Alexander Knafl, Senior Vice President at MAN Energy Solutions, shared his excitement: “Our collaboration with STX over the last three years has been pivotal in developing the MAN 35/44DF CD. We believe it will resonate well with operators of container ships and LNG carriers due to its impressive output. Plus, it considerably cuts down on methane slip while being ready for future fuels like methanol.”

Sephardim Koblenz, Vice president overseeing Licensing for Four-Stroke Marine & License at MAN Energy Solutions, added: “The design of the 35/44DF CD incorporates cutting-edge technology such as full connectivity and robust cybersecurity measures. Its reliability and fuel efficiency are key selling points along with low methane emissions—up to an impressive reduction of about 85% compared to industry norms.”

This new GenSet aims not only to lower capital expenditures (CAPEX) but also operational costs (OPEX), ensuring relevance well into the future. the foundation of this dual-fuel engine lies in proven models like the MAN 35/44DF CR and MAN 32/44CR engines which have demonstrated their capabilities through extensive operational hours over time.
