Harnessing Japanese Innovation to Transform Philippine Railways
In the Philippines, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is stepping in to boost energy efficiency within the railway sector. This initiative aims to cut costs and lessen environmental footprints by leveraging Japanese know-how.
The focus is on assisting Light Rail Manila Corporation, which operates LRT1,through technical support aimed at energy-saving measures. Experts from Japan will help pinpoint areas for enhancement in train control systems, motors, and substations. Additionally, strategies for harnessing regenerated energy and adopting more efficient driving practices are part of this collaboration.
This project is set to unfold between July 2025 and May 2026. The insights gained will be shared widely to help not just the goverment but also other rail operators enhance their efficiency while tackling greenhouse gas emissions throughout the rail industry.
