Alstom Shifts Rolling Stock Manufacturing Back to New York State
According to a recent publication by Alstom, the company has significantly enhanced its rolling stock manufacturing capabilities in Hornell, New York, with the launch of Plant 4. This $75 million facility stands out as one of the few advanced manufacturing sites in the U.S. that can produce stainless steel car bodyshells for passenger trains.
Previously, Alstom sourced these bodyshells from its Brazilian plant for American projects.By establishing Plant 4,they are bringing production back to U.S. soil—an initiative that not only reinforces Hornell’s status as the largest passenger train manufacturing hub in America but also bolsters local supply chains. This investment is set to maintain 390 jobs while generating an additional 258 positions focused on mechatronics and robotics.
The inaugural project at this new facility involves crafting 200 push-pull coaches for Chicago’s Metra commuter rail system under a €650 million contract awarded in 2021, with options for an extra batch of up to 300 coaches. The use of automated welding robots will ensure precision within just one millimeter.
additonally, Plant 4 will enhance production capabilities for various other projects like light rail vehicles intended for Philadelphia.
“Investing in American manufacturing means creating quality jobs that positively impact our entire community,” stated Michael Keroullé, President of Alstom Americas during the official opening ceremony on June 2nd. “We’re not merely constructing trains; we’re fostering opportunities throughout Hornell and beyond.” He emphasized that Plant 4 reflects their ongoing commitment to domestic train production while expanding their capacity to deliver innovative rail solutions. p>The construction and equipping of Plant 4 involved collaboration with around forty contractors. p>This initiative received backing through various grants and tax incentives from federal and state agencies such as New York Empire State Progress and the US Economic Development Administration among others. Notably, it included $3.4 million in federal funding along with up to $7 million offered by the state through performance-based tax credits. p>“We are bringing back good union jobs while revitalizing upstate New York,” remarked Governor Kathy Hochul, highlighting her vision of making New York a premier location for high-quality manufacturing.” p> div>
