Modi Unveils Transformative Rail Connection to Kashmir

According to a recent publication by Indian Railways, the picturesque landscapes of Jammu & Kashmir have become more integrated into India’s transportation framework. This conversion was marked on June 6 when Prime minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the inaugural train service from Katra to Srinagar.

Dressed for the occasion at Katra station, Modi emphasized that launching critically important infrastructure projects signifies a pivotal moment in Jammu & Kashmir’s growth trajectory. He then made his way to one of the railway’s most impressive feats—the Chenab river bridge, touted as the tallest globally. Carrying the national flag, he walked across this engineering marvel.

The Kashmir rail link is viewed by many as a cornerstone project for India’s infrastructure development. Initiated back in 1994, this enterprising endeavor spans approximately 272 kilometers from Udhampur to Srinagar and aims to ensure year-round access to the valley.

This project has undergone numerous revisions since its inception due to various construction hurdles and route adjustments. The government has also greenlit extensions beyond Srinagar towards Baramulla and eventually Kupwara. What began with an estimated budget of Rs25 billion in ’95 has ballooned past Rs400 billion today.

The segment through Kashmir Valley connecting Qazigund and Baramulla via Srinagar was relatively easier compared to other sections; it became operational over three phases, finishing up in October 2009.

The most challenging part was bridging Katra and Qazigund—this stretch navigates through Reasi district’s rugged terrain with limited infrastructure support. The route also crosses two deep gorges: one over Chenab River and another over Anji Khad tributary—all while being situated within an earthquake-prone area characterized by unstable geological conditions.

Agricultural Connectivity

Diving into celebrations, Prime Minister Modi crossed over Anji Khad bridge—a remarkable cable-stayed structure that marks its debut on Indian Railways’ network at a length of about 473 meters.

The new Katra-Baramulla line will feature specially designed trains tailored for Kashmir’s harsh mountain climate.

indian Railways has adapted five AC sleeper coaches along with one Vande bharat set equipped with chair cars specifically for this route. these modifications include heating elements embedded within cab windscreens and heated silicon components installed in onboard water tanks—both aimed at preventing ice-related issues during winter months.
While passenger transport is crucial, experts believe that this railway will substantially enhance agricultural trade opportunities for producers across Jammu & Kashmir looking toward markets further south.
The reduced travel time should especially benefit local farmers dealing in fresh fruits, vegetables, and plants according to IR officials.
