Canadians Rethink US Travel Amid Tariff Tensions and Political Disputes

The majority of Canadians seem to be steering clear of American travel this summer due to ongoing trade disputes between the two nations. Instead, they’re opting for domestic adventures—77% plan local trips compared to just 69% last year.
The primary reasons for avoiding U.S. travel include trade tensions and concerns over safety and potential border delays.

This trend reflects a larger movement among canadians who are boycotting American goods in response to President Trump’s tariffs and controversial remarks about Canada possibly becoming the “51st state.” Ther’s also anxiety regarding immigration policies that coudl affect visitors.
The impact on the U.S. economy could be significant; estimates suggest that foreign tourism pullbacks might cost billions in revenue this year alone. Bloomberg Intelligence reported that nearly $20 billion in retail spending from international tourists is at stake due to these tensions.
Leger has advised American tourism businesses on how crucial it is indeed for them to “rebuild trust” with Canadian travelers by adopting an approach that emphasizes understanding rather than blame.

A few Canadians still intend to visit friends or family across the border despite political concerns; they feel less impacted by current events than others do.
This survey included responses from over 1,500 Canadian residents between May16 and19 and has an accuracy rate within approximately ±2.5 percentage points at a confidence level of95%.
