According to a recent declaration from Anglo-eastern Univan Group, a prominent player in self-reliant ship management, the company is excited to introduce “Mission 30.” This ambitious programme aims to boost the percentage of its management-level officers—such as Captains, Chief Officers, Chief Engineers, and Second Engineers—under the age of 30 from a mere 1% to an extraordinary 30% by the year 2030.
With changes in crew dynamics and an increasingly competitive talent market demanding diverse skills among seafarers, Anglo-Eastern is proactively working towards building a youthful and adaptable workforce for key positions at sea.to support their seafarers’ career journeys effectively, Anglo-Eastern has established a dedicated Career Care team made up of seasoned Marine HR professionals. this team will spearhead the Career Care Programme set to launch in 2024. The initiative aims to provide structured career pathways along with personalized advice and essential skills that align with the fast-paced maritime industry.
As part of its commitment under the WE Care initiative focused on seafarer wellbeing, this programme will track and guide personnel through their career advancements. It emphasizes promotions within ranks, transitions from ratings to officer roles, reskilling for different vessel types, and even moving into shore-based jobs.
The Seafarer Workforce Report published by BIMCO alongside the International Chamber of Shipping highlights that as 2015 there has been an increase in average officer age at both management and operational levels. Alarmingly, fewer young officers are stepping into these roles as time goes on.

Now only about one percent fit that description,” he noted while discussing Mission 30’s inception. “This shift could pose challenges ahead as we prepare for future demands requiring adaptability alongside technological advancements like AI integration.”
Mission 30 includes several strategies designed to enhance professional advancement for seafarers associated with Anglo-Eastern:
- Customized career Pathway Map: Each officer receives a personalized visual roadmap outlining steps needed to reach their desired career goals.
- Focused Training Programs: Tailored training sessions are available aimed at ensuring timely promotions.
- Mentorship through Career Care Team: Experienced mentors offer guidance on Certificate of Competency (COC) exams along with long-term planning for careers; newly promoted officers will be matched with respected peers who can provide mentorship support.
So far over 5,000 operational-level officers and cadets have been invited to join Mission 30.
Vinay Singh emphasized their dedication towards nurturing future-ready maritime professionals: “We encourage all young seafarers not just to take advantage of this chance but also aim high—to advance quickly into leadership roles before turning thirty.
