U.K. Warns Consumers About Jolly Ranchers Candy Safety Concerns

A recent publication by the U.K. Food Standards agency (FSA) has raised alarms about certain Jolly Ranchers candies, labeling them as “unsafe to eat” due to ingredients that may harm DNA and elevate cancer risks.

As reported by BBC News on June 11, the FSA urged both businesses and consumers in the U.K. to refrain from buying or selling these products, which are manufactured by Hershey, a well-known American company. The candies contain harmful chemical compounds—mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons (MOAH) and mineral oil saturated hydrocarbons (MOSH)—that do not meet U.K. safety regulations.

This revelation comes amid ongoing negotiations for a trade agreement between the U.K. and the U.S., further complicating matters given that other food items like hormone-treated American beef are already banned in Britain.

The FSA indicated that while these products could pose health risks if consumed frequently over time, ther is currently “no immediate cause for concern,” as the overall food safety risk remains low.

the Hershey Company has been collaborating with british authorities as 2024 to withdraw these problematic Jolly Rancher varieties from shelves; though, some retailers have continued importing them despite warnings.

The specific candies under scrutiny include Jolly Rancher Hard Candy, Jolly Rancher ‘Misfits’ Gummies, Jolly Rancher Hard Candy Fruity 2 in 1, and Jolly Ranchers Berry Gummies.
