Glasgow Firm Set to Transform London Underground Carriages

According to a recent report from Transport for London (TfL),Gibson’s Engineering has landed a critically important contract to refurbish 23 engineering wagons, aiming to extend their operational lifespan by an notable eight years. This project, taking place at the St Rollox facility in Springburn, Glasgow, is set to unfold over two years and is expected to create around 40 new jobs in the area.

The St Rollox site has quite a history; it was once part of the Caledonian Railway and changed hands multiple times before being shuttered by Gemini Rail in 2019. In a turn of events, businessman David Moulsdale acquired and revamped the facility for £10 million in 2021. By 2024, Gibson’s Engineering reopened it as a hub for rail manufacturing, maintenance, and repairs.

Fraser Gibson, Managing Director of Gibson’s Engineering, expressed optimism about this contract on June 9th. He noted that it signifies progress towards revitalizing “The Caley,” highlighting not only workforce growth but also exciting new projects on the horizon.

Tom Cunnington from TfL’s Logistics & Manufacturing division emphasized that their extensive supply chain fosters economic opportunities throughout the UK. He pointed out that approximately two-thirds of their suppliers are located outside London—demonstrating how investments can ripple thru various regions beyond just the capital city.

This initiative not only showcases advancements within rail engineering but also reflects broader trends where local economies benefit from infrastructure projects. It serves as an exmaple of how strategic partnerships can lead to job creation while enhancing essential services across different communities.
