Revolutionizing Rail: How Automation Transforms Efficiency at the Netherlands' Premier Rail Yard

According to a recent publication by Siemens Mobility, the company has successfully wrapped up a €110 million initiative aimed at boosting efficiency and minimizing handling times at the Netherlands’ largest rail freight yard.

The kijfhoek facility, located southeast of Rotterdam and spanning 50 hectares, now features Siemens’ advanced Trackguard Cargo MSR32 yard automation system. This site boasts an impressive layout with 14 arrival tracks, 41 sorting tracks, and 12 stabling sidings.

This automation project is designed to streamline operations from the moment trains arrive until they depart. It includes sophisticated route and speed control units, retarders for slowing down trains safely, propelling systems for efficient movement within the yard, and high-precision radio control for hump shunting locomotives.

A maintainance service agreement will follow this modernization effort, lasting for an additional 15 years.

Dura Vermeer was responsible for carrying out infrastructure upgrades and track renewals as part of this project.

“The upgrade at Kijfhoek showcases how smart automation can revolutionize rail freight logistics,” stated jens Nordmann, Head of Mainline at siemens Mobility on June 2. “We’re not just improving operational efficiency; we’re also setting new benchmarks for sustainable freight transport across europe.” p>The infrastructure manager ProRail emphasized that this enhancement positions the site well for its operational needs over the next decade and a half. p>“With our freight yard fully modernized,” remarked Helga Cuijpers, Regional Director for Randstad South, “it’s not only faster but also reinforces its role as a vital hub linking Rotterdam’s port with other major industrial areas in Europe.” p> div>
