Trump Approves New Freight-Only Bridge to Strengthen US-Mexico Trade Connections
A recent publication by Green Corridors highlights an ambitious initiative designed to ease the congestion of truck traffic at the U.S.-Mexico border. this project is especially timely as long wait times have become a significant issue for freight transporters.
The plan has received the green light from President Donald Trump, who approved a considerable project that allows a private investment group to build and manage an elevated guideway crossing over the Rio Grande in Laredo, Texas. This new infrastructure will link inland terminals near Monterrey, Mexico with Interstate 35 just north of Laredo.
Dubbed Green Corridors, this venture is entirely funded through private investments—meaning no taxpayer dollars are involved. the primary aim? To considerably reduce truck traffic delays that currently plague this international crossing.
The benefits are clear: “By cutting down on idle time at borders, drivers can concentrate on transporting goods rather than waiting,” stated representatives from the investment group.
As part of their agreement with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP),the investors will provide necessary inspection facilities and infrastructure improvements without any cost to taxpayers. However, it’s vital to note that there’s no obligation for government agencies to maintain specific service levels or staffing for these facilities.

This permit is valid for five years unless construction begins within that timeframe. The investors believe that separating freight from regular traffic will not only foster economic growth but also facilitate urban growth while transforming congested areas into efficient transit routes.
“Green Corridors’ innovative freight system promises long-term benefits by alleviating congestion and enhancing border security,” noted the investment team. “We’re leading a new era in freight transport with eco-pleasant autonomous shuttles operating on dedicated elevated paths.” they emphasize how this approach integrates smoothly with existing systems while redefining transportation efficiency.
This initiative aligns well with U.S. foreign policy objectives by sidestepping eminent domain challenges and improving community safety through strategic relocation of inspections away from urban centers where heavy traffic could pose risks.
The Clever Freight Transportation System aims not only to bolster border security but also eliminate wait times for cross-border shipments by ensuring all cargo entering the country undergoes thorough scanning while adhering seamlessly to CBP protocols.
Laredo’s crossing stands as one of four major freight routes connecting Texas and Mexico—others include Brownsville, Eagle Pass, and el Paso—with Brownsville’s facility having opened its doors in 2015.
A notable rail connection between Texas and Mexico was established last year when Canadian Pacific Kansas City inaugurated the Patrick J. Ottensmeyer International Railway Bridge in December—a significant addition expected to double freight capacity across the Rio Grande after its construction began on October 31st, 2022 and concluded on December 17th, 2024 at a cost of $100 million!
