Portugal Pioneers Marine Conservation with Innovative Protected Zone

A recent publication by Reuters highlights Portugal’s initiative to establish a new protected marine area surrounding the Gorringe Ridge in the Atlantic Ocean, which is home to Western Europe’s tallest underwater mountain. This move positions Portugal as a frontrunner in achieving international conservation objectives. Surroundings Minister Maria da Graca Carvalho made this proclamation while countries convene in Nice for the third U.N. Oceans conference, where discussions focus on enhancing efforts to safeguard marine ecosystems. With the introduction of the Gorringe marine protected area (MPA), located approximately 200 kilometers off Portugal’s southern coast, along with two additional smaller zones, the nation aims to increase its protected maritime regions from 19% to at least 27%. Carvalho proudly stated that Portugal stands out globally for its unique blend of continental and insular territories when it comes to marine protection.

the global push for more MPAs is a significant agenda item at the U.N. conference, especially as nations work towards ratifying and implementing the 2023 High Seas Treaty designed to protect biodiversity in international waters. Currently, 51 countries have signed on to this treaty—just shy of the required 60 for it to take effect legally.

According to data from last October, only about 8.4% of global marine and coastal areas are currently under protection—far below the ambitious target of reaching 30% by 2030.Carvalho anticipates that formal approval for this MPA will come through a decree within months; specifics regarding total size and fully protected zones where fishing will be prohibited are still being finalized.

Emanuel Gonçalves from Oceano Azul Foundation noted that their collaboration with the Portuguese navy has led them to recommend an MPA covering around 100,000 square kilometers (38,610 square miles). He emphasized that such an expansive MPA would effectively link seamounts and deep-sea habitats while providing refuge for migratory species like turtles and sharks.Last year marked another milestone when Portugal established its largest protected area in the North Atlantic around the Azores archipelago—spanning nearly 300,000 square kilometers—with half designated as fully protected zones.

This proactive approach not only showcases Portugal’s commitment but also sets an example for other nations striving toward lasting ocean management practices worldwide.
