Global Shipping Alliance Welcomes Malta as Full Member and Introduces New Leadership
According to a recent declaration from the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), John Denholm CBE has been nominated as the Chairman Designate, set to take over from Emanuele Grimaldi when his term concludes at the ICS Annual general Meeting in June 2026. Denholm, who is currently serving as Vice Chair and represents the UK on the Board, also leads J. & J.Denholm Limited—a family-owned buisness that operates in shipping, logistics, seafood, and industrial services.
In addition to this leadership change, ICS has welcomed three new vice Chairs: dr. Gaby bornheim from Germany, Carl-Johan Hagman representing japan, and Claes Berglund from Sweden. meanwhile, Themis Papadopoulos of Cyprus and Caroline Yang from Singapore will be stepping down after four years of dedicated service. Metin Düzgit from Türkiye remains in his first two-year term after being elected in 2023.
Moreover, Thomas Kazakos has taken on the role of secretary general for ICS following a formal transition with Guy Platten during the AGM. kazakos previously held a position as Director General at the Cyprus Shipping Chamber before joining ICS in April to facilitate this changeover.
The handover ceremony was notably attended by Nikos Christodoulides, President of Cyprus, who extended warm wishes to Kazakos while also recognizing Platten’s contributions over seven years—especially during challenging times like the COVID-19 pandemic and significant incidents such as the ever Given blockage.
Platten’s tenure was marked by efforts aimed at navigating global crises while pushing for decarbonization within shipping practices—an area where ICS made significant strides under his guidance.
In another significant development for global shipping dynamics, Malta transitioned from an Associate Member status to Full Membership within ICS through its national shipowners association’s inclusion—underscoring Malta’s growing influence on international maritime affairs.
During their recent meeting, board members tackled pressing issues including rising protectionism and trade tariffs that are reshaping global trade routes and supply chains. they expressed concerns about an emerging division into distinct trading blocs which could redefine future commerce patterns worldwide.
Another hot topic was upcoming greenhouse gas regulations proposed by the International Maritime organization (IMO). These anticipated rules are expected to receive approval soon and could significantly alter operational standards for vessels globally; despite complexities arising during negotiations where ICS played a pivotal role.
The Board also emphasized maintaining secure supply chains while prioritizing seafarer welfare amid ongoing global challenges—a sentiment echoed by outgoing Chairman Emanuele Grimaldi who highlighted that strong leadership is essential during these turbulent times. He expressed confidence in John Denholm’s readiness for his new role while welcoming Thomas Kazakos aboard and thanking Guy Platten for his extensive service record with ICS.
