Innovative Rubber-Tyred Light Metro Arrives for Busan's Yangsan Line Expansion
According to a recent publication by Busan Transportation Corp, Woojin Industrial Systems has successfully delivered the first of nine automated guideway transit vehicles for the Yangsan Line in Busan, South Korea.
This project is part of a notable contract worth 34.2 billion won that was finalized in August 2022. The innovative technology behind these vehicles is a collaborative effort between Woojin Industrial Systems and the Korea Railroad Research Institute.
The initial vehicle is set to begin test runs soon, with plans for the remaining eight units to be completed by August.
The Yangsan Line will mark South Korea’s second automated metro system following Busan’s rubber-tyred Line 4 and will also be its first single-track light metro line. This design allows trains to pass each other at designated loops within stations.
This peoplemover boasts several advanced features including a collision energy absorption mechanism, tire puncture detection systems, and an inspection setup that utilizes TE-R wireless technology for proactive maintenance data collection.
Additions like regenerative braking systems and wireless charging ports for mobile devices enhance user convenience as well.
A unique aspect of this transit system is its windows that automatically tint when passing through densely populated areas, ensuring privacy for local residents.
The elevated Yangsan Line will stretch over an impressive distance of 11.4 kilometers from Nopo terminus on metro Line 1 to Bukjeong in Yangsan, featuring seven stations along its route.
Citing progress reports from early May, construction has reached an impressive completion rate of 89%. Work began back in 2018 with plans for the line’s opening set for the year 2026.
