New Arctic Patrol Vessel Joins the Royal Canadian Navy Fleet

A recent publication by Canada.ca highlights the Royal Canadian Navy’s (RCN) latest addition, His Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS) Frédérick Rolette, which has officially been commissioned in a ceremonial event.
During this traditional naval ceremony,Commander Jolene Lisi received the commissioning pennant and raised both the ship’s pennant and ensign,marking a critically important milestone for the crew.HMCS Frédérick Rolette is now the fifth vessel in the Harry DeWolf class of Arctic and Offshore Patrol Vessels (AOPVs), designed to bolster Canada’s maritime sovereignty, notably in its northern territories and offshore waters. These ships are not just about presence; they’re equipped to tackle emerging security challenges in Arctic regions.

This versatile ship is built for various missions—ranging from surveillance tasks to humanitarian aid during crises or natural disasters. Wiht ample storage space, it can transport cargo and small vehicles while also being prepared to support operations involving a CH-148 Cyclone helicopter down the line.
Commander Lisi expressed her pride regarding this achievement, viewing it as a celebratory moment that opens doors for future operations both domestically and internationally.
Vice-Admiral Angus Topshee commended the sailors’ hard work throughout their training and sea trials. He emphasized that HMCS Frédérick Rolette serves as an essential asset for safeguarding canada’s interests across its three oceans.
The honourable David J. McGuinty, Minister of National Defense, underscored how crucial this vessel is for maintaining Canada’s sovereignty. He pointed out that having a robust naval presence along Atlantic, Pacific, and Arctic coasts is vital—and HMCS Frédérick Rolette plays an integral role in achieving that objective.

Named after Lieutenant Frédérick Rolette—a notable figure during the War of 1812 known for his leadership—this ship honors Canada’s rich maritime history. The naming ceremony took place back in May 2024 before its official delivery to RCN later that August.
The Harry DeWolf class pays tribute to Vice-Admiral Harry DeWolf’s legacy as a distinguished wartime leader; HMCS Harry DeWolf was first delivered on July 30th of 2020 before being commissioned on June 26th of 2021.

These Arctic patrol vessels are crafted not only for surveillance but also play critical roles during humanitarian efforts or disaster relief situations when necessary. Each ship is adept at navigating challenging environments while supporting global naval operations effectively.
Currently under construction is HMCS Robert Hampton Gray—the final vessel in this series—which is anticipated to join RCN by August 2025.
