Revamping Logistics: How NMFTA's LTL Freight Code Changes Inspire C.H. Robinson's AI Innovations

C.H. Robinson has reported a significant increase in automation for LTL orders, rising from 50% to over 75% as implementing their new tool. (C.H.Robinson)

A recent publication by C.H. Robinson reveals that they have introduced a generative AI agent aimed at streamlining freight classification as the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) system undergoes substantial updates starting July 19.

This overhaul will change how less-than-truckload (LTL) freight is categorized, which could impact pricing and logistics planning substantially. Incorrect classifications can result in inspections, delays, and increased costs.

to mitigate these issues, C.H. Robinson’s AI tool accurately identifies the appropriate class and code—notably useful for email submissions were shippers might overlook or misrepresent classification details.

“Many LTL shippers are either unaware or confused about their freight’s classification,” noted Greg West, vice president of LTL at the Eden Prairie-based firm. “That’s why we developed an AI solution that not only determines the correct class but also aids another of our agents in converting tenders into precise orders.”

C.H. Robinson leads North America in moving LTL freight and ranks second on Transport Topics’ Top 100 logistics companies list; they’ve seen automation soar from half to over three-quarters of their LTL orders as launching this technology.

The AI agent processes around 2,000 shipments daily and can assign an NMFC code within approximately ten seconds—just three seconds after it learns a specific type of freight.

“Unlike human operators who handle one shipment at a time, our AI can manage hundreds simultaneously,” explained Arun Rajan, chief strategy officer. “This efficiency translates into savings exceeding 300 hours each day.”

The system will automatically adapt to align with the updated NMFC standards while encouraging shippers to verify that their cargo dimensions and weights are accurate; discounts through partnerships with dimensioning tech providers are also available.

“With generative AI now integrated into our operations,” said Michael Castagnetto, president of North American Surface Transportation at C.H. Robinson, “our clients gain a competitive edge.”

C.H.Robinson holds the No.20 spot on Transport Topics’ Top Global Freight Carriers list.
