China Launches Its First Hydrogen-Powered Tugboat at Qingdao Port

China has recently launched its inaugural hydrogen-electric tugboat, known as Hydrogen-Electric Tug No.1 or “Qing Dian Tuo 1.” This innovative vessel commenced operations on June 26 at Qingdao Port, located in the eastern Shandong Province, as reported by local news outlets.

This tugboat features a cutting-edge hybrid propulsion system that merges hydrogen fuel cells with liquid-cooled lithium batteries. Thanks to this technology, it operates without emitting carbon and can run for over 12 hours at a cruising speed of 9 knots. With an impressive towing capacity of 82 tons, it stands out as the most powerful harbor tug in China and boasts the largest lithium battery capacity available.

Local port authorities anticipate that this advancement will lead to a reduction of more than 1,500 tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year when compared to traditional diesel-powered tugs. Additionally, it promises enhancements in noise reduction, longevity of equipment, and overall energy efficiency.

The design and construction were spearheaded by the “Liangang Innovation Team” from Shandong Port Qingdao port Group Co., Ltd., incorporating state-of-the-art technologies like the Beidou satellite navigation system along with an automated bright charging station onshore.

Zhang Lei,who serves as deputy general manager for Qingdao Port’s barge company, emphasized that introducing this vessel marks a pivotal step towards lowering emissions during port activities while pushing forward the transition to smarter and greener infrastructure within the port area.

This initiative aligns with Qingdao Port’s broader strategy for hydrogen energy progress. By mid-2025, they plan to roll out joint testing for ten hydrogen-powered rail cranes alongside cogeneration hydrogen fuel cells rated at 300kW. These initiatives are designed to enhance hydrogen energy utilization across various operations within the port.

beyond upgrading equipment capabilities, Qingdao Port is also implementing a green energy coordination framework and has successfully executed northern China’s first international biofuel oil refueling operation for ships.

Looking ahead, port officials are committed to further expanding their use of hydrogen technology while continuing efforts toward modernizing their operational equipment.
