Poland Unveils Its Inaugural Signal Intelligence Vessel

On July 1, 2025, Poland celebrated a notable achievement with the launch of it’s inaugural SIGINT (signal intelligence) vessel, ORP Jerzy Różycki, in Gdańsk. As reported by Saab, this event drew attention from key figures in the Polish Ministry of National Defense and various military branches. this launch is part of Poland’s aspiring ‘DELFIN’ program, which includes two advanced SIGINT ships.
The journey to this moment began with the initial steel cut back in April 2023 and continued with the keel laying later that year. Before ORP Jerzy Różycki officially joins the fleet, it will be outfitted with cutting-edge reconnaissance technology and undergo rigorous sea trials to ensure operational readiness.
Named after a notable figure in cryptology—Jerzy Różycki—who played a crucial role alongside Marian Rejewski and Henryk Zygalski in deciphering Germany’s Enigma machine during the interwar years—the ship symbolizes Poland’s commitment to enhancing its defense capabilities.
Micael Johansson,President and CEO of Saab,remarked on this milestone: “The launch of ORP Jerzy Różycki showcases what can be achieved through collaboration. It highlights how countries around the Baltic Sea can unite their efforts to create solutions that enhance our collective security.” He emphasized that such advancements are vital for Europe as it faces new challenges.
Equipped with refined electronic intelligence systems, thes vessels will gather critical data across various maritime domains.Saab leads as the primary contractor for constructing these ships while Remontowa Shipbuilding S.A. handles actual construction tasks. Additionally, Polish firm MMC contributes design expertise under Saab’s guidance. The project also sees participation from other sectors within Poland’s defense industry.
