Valencia Port installs Anti-Drone system

The Port Authority of Valencia (APV) has activated a new high-tech anti-drone system aimed at safeguarding the airspace over and around the port. The system, provided by Telefónica, is already operational and has started detecting unauthorized drone activity in real time.

With the increasing use of drones near populated and sensitive areas, APV’s new system enables real-time detection, identification, and geolocation of drones operating within a 10-kilometre radius and up to 500 metres in altitude. It can distinguish between authorized and unauthorized flights, and automatically alerts Spanish security forces in case of suspicious activity.

The system – a Sendes DAU-K10 QD unit – relies on passive radio frequency detection, allowing it to intercept communication between the drone and its operator. This includes access to telemetry data, helping to track both commercial and improvised devices, whether or not they broadcast identification protocols.

Monitored around the clock from APV’s remote security center, the setup operates autonomously and has already proven effective: within its first week of use, it detected two unauthorized drones in the port’s vicinity.

With this new system, the Port of Valencia joins over 200 locations worldwide using similar technology to protect sensitive zones, including critical infrastructure and major public events.
