Tragedy Strikes in Gulf of Suez: Four Lives Lost as Search Continues for Missing Oil Rig Crew

A recent report from Egypt’s Petroleum Ministry highlights a tragic maritime accident that took place on Tuesday in the Gulf of Suez. an oil drilling barge, known as Adam Marine 12, capsized near Ras Ghareb, leading to the unfortunate loss of four lives and leaving another four crew members unaccounted for. This incident unfolded in the Gebel El-Zeit area, a crucial hub for oil production situated about 300 kilometers south of the Suez Canal.

At the time of this distressing event, there were 30 people aboard the vessel. Thankfully, rescue efforts managed to save 22 individuals who received prompt medical care; four were airlifted while others were taken by ambulance to local hospitals.

Governor Hanafi reported that search and rescue operations involving the Egyptian Navy continued throughout the night in hopes of finding those still missing. While officials have yet to confirm what caused the barge to capsize, preliminary reports indicate it may have flipped during a repositioning maneuver for upcoming drilling activities.

Despite this serious incident, operations within one of the globe’s busiest shipping lanes—the Suez Canal—remain unaffected. Admiral Osama Rabie from the Suez Canal Authority reassured that transit schedules are intact with 33 vessels expected to navigate through on Wednesday without delay.

In light of this tragedy, authorities have initiated an investigation into how such an event could occur. Additionally, maritime and energy experts are reviewing safety measures related to offshore operations amid rising concerns about potential hazards during vessel transfers associated with oil exploration activities.
