According to a recent publication by Gartner, supply chain experts need to prioritize customer experience alongside traditional focuses like cost savings and operational efficiency. It’s essential to recognize that a triumphant supply chain is heavily influenced by how well it meets customer expectations.

To truly enhance the customer experience, gathering insights directly from customers is crucial. Engaging with their feedback helps identify pain points and areas for advancement.

“Understanding the voice of the customer means actively listening to their needs,” says Mike Dominy, vice president of supply chain research at Gartner. “It’s vital for supply chain leaders to communicate with one another about challenges in their operations and explore ways to improve.” This dialog is fundamental in shaping a responsive supply chain.

This principle applies across various industries since there are always opportunities to tailor supply chains for better customer experiences. Dominy notes that while some sectors, like heavy industrial manufacturing, may have limited flexibility—primarily differentiating through logistics or added services—others such as high-tech or complex discrete manufacturing can innovate right from product design through delivery.

A collaborative approach involving multiple departments is key for implementing an effective customer-focused supply chain strategy. Research indicates that when someone from the executive level oversees these initiatives, they are four times more likely to succeed. While it’s not mandatory for a chief supply chain officer to lead these efforts, their involvement on the team remains critical.
