A cargo ship carrying scrap metal caught fire on Friday morning while moored at Albert Dock in Hull, blanketing the city in thick smoke. Emergency services rushed to the scene around 10 a.m. after reports of heavy smoke and a strong burning smell drifting through the city centre.
Humberside Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that four fire engines and an aerial ladder platform were sent to tackle the blaze onboard the Altay, a Marshall Islands-registered dry bulk carrier. Ambulance crews and the Hull Coastguard Rescue Team also joined the emergency response at the dock.
Officials said the fire started in the ship’s cargo hold, where scrap metal was being stored. No injuries have been reported.
Due to wind conditions, smoke from the ship quickly spread into Hull’s city centre, causing visibility issues. Residents were advised to stay indoors and keep windows and doors closed.
