The Greek government has officially opened an international call to tender for the concession of rights to explore and exploit hydrocarbons in the Ionian Sea, off western Greece.
Energy and Climate Minister Theodoros Skylakakis signed off on the relevant call to tender regarding the offshore regions, designated as “South of the Peloponnese” and “A2” blocs, for which Chevron and HELLENiQ ENERGY had shown interest, respectively.
According to the official announcement, this initiative follows the Ministry of Environment and Energy’s approval of the expressions of interest submitted by the two companies. As part of the process, the minister has endorsed the Hellenic Hydrocarbon and Energy Resources Management Company (HEREMA) tender. The bidding period will remain open for 90 days from the date of its publication in the European journal.
The process was already underway, Skylakakis had signed a decision on January 23 outlining the exact boundaries of the offshore areas granted for hydrocarbon exploration and exploitation. Commenting on the announcement, the minister stated that this marks a significant step toward strengthening Greece’s energy security by facilitating the search for substantial natural gas reserves.
