CVS Pharmacy also purchased the prescription files of 626 former Rite Aid and Bartell Drugs pharmacies across 15 states. The move enables CVS to serve more than nine million former Rite Aid and Bartell Drugs patients.
Len Shankman, Executive Vice President and President of Pharmacy and Consumer Wellness at CVS Health, said the completion of the transaction would help “maintain and expand access to convenient and trusted pharmacy care” across the country.
The company emphasised that its goal is to ensure continuity of care for customers transitioning from Rite Aid and Bartell Drugs to CVS.
Recruitment and investment to support pharmacy operations
To strengthen its expanded network, CVS Pharmacy has hired more than 3,500 former Rite Aid and Bartell Drugs employees.

By GlobalDataThe company stated that these hires were made to help maintain service standards and ensure patients continue to receive timely prescription support.
CVS has also made targeted investments in existing pharmacy locations, including improving staff scheduling, recruitment and training.
These measures are intended to support both new and existing patients as operations at the newly acquired sites stabilise.
Transaction finalised following bankruptcy court approval
The acquisition follows a ruling by the US Bankruptcy Court for the District of New Jersey, which approved the sale of selected Rite Aid assets to CVS Pharmacy in May 2025.
The entire transaction process was completed in under four months, with the final store acquisitions in Bend, Oregon, and Bainbridge Island, Washington, concluded on 30 September.
CVS said that maintaining convenience and access to essential prescriptions were key factors in deciding which Rite Aid locations and prescription files to acquire.
Most of the CVS stores receiving transferred prescription files are within three miles of an existing Rite Aid branch, and nearly half are within one mile — minimising disruption for patients and communities affected by Rite Aid’s bankruptcy proceedings.
