MSC Baltic III boxship cannot be safely refloated, coastguard says

After the cargo ship MSC Baltic III lost power and ran aground in Wild Cove west of Lark Harbour on February 15, salvors are continuing their assessment of the ship, as sea conditions allow, and are developing the salvage plan. However, the Canadian Coast Guard reported on February 27 that given the vessel’s current condition, it cannot be safely refloated.

Now the initial focus will be on the removal of the fuel and cargo from the containership MSC Baltic III.

“Our priority is the safety of Canadians and the protection of the marine environment; by helping to prevent the release of pollution into the environment and mitigating the potential hazards posed by this vessel,” the coast guard said.

Canadian Coast Guard crews continue to assess the MSC Baltic III from the shoreline and by air. No pollution has been observed. However, sea conditions continue to hamper some on the water operations.

Discussions are taking place about the possible development of a road to allow easier access to the vessel.
