EST orders hybrid mobile harbor crane to enhance Augusta port operations

Europea Servizi Terminalistici Srl (EST), a subsidiary of Italian Shipping & Logistics Agency Srl (ISLA), has placed an order for a Konecranes Gottwald ESP.8 hybrid mobile harbor crane to support operations at the rapidly expanding Port of Augusta in Sicily.

The order was confirmed in the first quarter of 2025, with delivery and commissioning scheduled for late summer.

“As we scale up operations in Augusta, we’re focused on immediate efficiency gains while preparing for a fully electric future. This first investment in Konecranes hybrid equipment is perfectly aligned with our journey, enabling us to take on more complex cargo in a sustainable manner and to meet the increasing demand for our services, especially from the growing offshore wind industry in the Mediterranean,” stated Pietro B. Coniglio, Managing Director of EST and ISLA.

Following its recent 25-year concession to manage Augusta’s new container terminal, EST aims to boost efficiency and sustainability with this investment.

“Ports are evolving and with this investment EST is keeping pace with the change. Konecranes Gottwald mobile harbor cranes are a future-proof choice for port operators looking to balance productivity and sustainability on the journey to full electrification,” commented Gino Gherri, Regional Sales Manager at Konecranes.

The crane features a 150-tonne lifting capacity, a 5.3-meter tower extension, and 65-tonne twin-lift spreaders, enabling enhanced container handling and the transport of heavy cargo, including wind energy components.

Advanced Konecranes predictive services, supported by TRUCONNECT monitoring and a condition-based maintenance system, will ensure optimized performance.

The crane’s hybrid drive system integrates a diesel engine with two ultracapacitors, reducing fuel consumption and emissions. Additionally, it is designed for external power connectivity, allowing for full electrification and zero onsite emissions once the necessary infrastructure is established.

EST previously relocated a Konecranes Gottwald Generation 5 mobile harbor crane from Sicily’s Port of Catania to the Augusta terminal. This latest investment in cutting-edge Konecranes technology reflects EST’s long-standing trust in the manufacturer’s solutions.
