The Switch secures contract for shaft generator drives on new aframax tankers

The Switch has secured a contract to supply single drives for shaft generators to be installed on four tankers currently under construction at Xiamen Shipbuilding Industry in China’s Fujian Province.

The vessels, designed by the Shanghai Ship Research and Design Institute, are 113,600-dwt Aframax tankers powered by LNG dual-fuel engines.

Built for UK-based ship owner Union Maritime, these tankers are scheduled for delivery in the first half of 2027.

Swiss marine energy solutions provider and engine manufacturer WinGD is serving as the system integrator for the Power Take-Off system on board.

Stefan Goranov, Head of Integrated Energy Solutions at WinGD, said WinGD’s X-EL Integrated Systems are designed to optimise overall vessel performance by streamlining energy flow between all power producers and consumers on board. He also stressed that selecting the right components for each subsystem is vital.

Juha Tennivaara, Vice President of Sales at The Switch, noted that WinGD is a valued reference in the competitive marine market.

The Switch’s single drives are highly versatile, with applications extending beyond shaft generator connections to include propulsion systems (linking electric motors to AC systems), energy storage (battery pack integration), and renewable energy sources (fuel cells, solar, and wind).
