Asia’s Europe-Bound Container Exports Grow

Asia’s container exports to Europe reached 1.64 million TEUs in April, marking an 8.4% two back-to-back months of year-on-year increase, according to data from the Japan Maritime Center (JMC) based on Container Trades Statistics (CTS).

Exports grew from all regions, with those from China and Hong Kong growing 9.1% to a total of 1.29 million TEUs, from Southeast Asia 4.5% to 200,142 TEUs, and from other parts of Northeast Asia 7.6% to 156,074 TEUs.



Growth was also seen across all European destinations. Exports to Northern Europe rose 6.6% to one million TEUs. Shipments to the Eastern Mediterranean surged 12.5% to 328,918 TEUs, while exports to the Western Mediterranean grew 9.8% to 312,772 TEUs.

Meanwhile, imports from Europe to Asia shrank 9.2% to 489,724 TEUs in March, incurring a year-on-year contraction for the eighth consecutive month.

The decline affected all European regions, with those from North Europe sliding 10.6% to 333,236 TEUs from the Western Mediterranean, 6.5% to 82,343 TEUs and from the Eastern Mediterranean, 5.7% to 74,145 TEUs.

By Asian destination, European imports fell across the board as well. Shipments to China dropped 7.3% to 240,067 TEUs, to Southeast Asia by 13.1% to 138,900 TEUs, and to other parts of Northeast Asia by 8.2% to 110,757 TEUs.
